New Nursery in Costa Rica to Donate Upwards of 10,000 Trees Annually

July 17, 2024

Fresh Del Monte inaugurated a new forest nursery in Sarapiquí, Costa Rica to promote reforestation in the country.

The nursery, called La Danta Nursery, is approximately 2,500 m2 and dedicated to the reproduction of native species whose seeds are collected in the company’s wooded areas. Among the 27 species of trees that are produced in this nursery are the Bitter Cedar, Carao, Yellow Bark, Mountain Almond, Jabillo, Chinese Mamón, Loquat, among others.

The trees will later be donated to neighboring lands to aid in reforestation, with a goal of 10,000 per year.

The first donations took place in June 2024, where 115 trees were donated to the private owner Jessica Quesada, 200 to the Committee of Environment and Tourism Projection of Agua Zarcas and 5 to the Zapote school, an educational center in the area.

“Fresh Del Monte’s seriousness in this project is supported by the results of our first forest nursery, located in El Peje de Volcán, Buenos Aires de Puntarenas. 31 years after its founding, through its historical production and donation, it has contributed to the reforestation of more than 1,800 hectares with the donation of about 1.8 million trees,” said Kelly Sánchez, Agricultural Environmental Engineer of Fresh Del Monte.

“The restoration of landscapes has multiple contributions to the planet. At Fresh Del Monte, we want to be known for our environmental commitment. Landscape restoration contributes to the protection of water resources, sequestration of carbon, mitigation of climate change, expansion of habitats for biodiversity, improvement of air quality, among other positive impacts,” added Sánchez.
