Perhaps nowhere is Fresh Del Monte’s commitment to organic more clear than its organic avocado program. In 2024, the company has increased its unit sales by 54%, said Nuno Baptista Miranda, senior brand manager.
Organic bananas, however, remain the company’s top organic seller.
“Fresh Del Monte has continuously increased its presence in the organic segment throughout the years, and we are committed to sourcing new products that meet the evolving needs and wants of consumers,” Miranda said.
The demand for organic products has definitely increased in recent years, he added. This year, for instance, organic is growing faster than conventional produce. According to Circana data, organic is up 10% in volume YTD. Conventional is up just 3%.
There are several reasons for this increasing demand, Miranda said. Among the top ones are personal health and wellbeing, demand for more natural products, and environmental concerns.
“Consumers relate organic foods to environmental concerns, and Fresh Del Monte has just released its sixth sustainability report. The report highlights our achievements and work in smart farming, as well as regenerative and responsible agriculture.”
Del Monte’s approach to regenerative agriculture involves integrating and managing live ground covers, soil health, carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and water availability to maintain a healthy ecosystem in its production areas, Miranda said.
Eighty-six percent of the company’s global product volume is certified as sustainably grown by SCS Global Services.
